It is a key feature of WordPress to create multiple users in our WP Site with various capabilities and roles.We have the built-in user management system in WordPress. On the basis of adding the users, there are five default user roles. In this article, we are going to see two things. One is, what are the five roles and its definition. Second, the way to add user/customizing the existing user in our WP Site.
Five Roles And Its Definition
This is the most efficient and major role for WordPress User who can create, edit or even delete anything in their WordPress Site. Simply to say they are the owner of the site. One of the major roles is administrator can create another user with any roles(even they can create another administrator role, so admin should be very careful before adding another user as admin)
This user can create a new post, edit any post which are being created by another user and delete the post. Admin can install, edit and delete the plugins and themes.
Administrator can also remove the user from their WordPress Site. Also, it is possible to remove another admin. The password will be provided by the administrator for all user in his/her WP Site and also it can be changed only by the administrator.
An editor who is added by the administrator can view, edit, publish and delete any post and pages including the ones written by other users. The editor can also edit the comments as well.
But the editor cannot change the site, install plugins, themes and also cannot add any users.
The Author has roles like write, edit and publish their own posts. They can also delete their own posts, even if they are published. They also have the power to choose categories from the existing category, however, they cannot create a category.
They can also view the comments, but they cannot approve, edit and delete the comments. They do not have access to plugins and themes.
The contributor has the role to create a post, but they cannot publish it. Once the post is ready it will be submitted to the administrator for review. As like author, the contributor can also choose categories from existing and not to create own. However, they can add tags to their post.
The major disadvantage is this user cannot even upload files to their post. They can view comments, but they cannot approve or delete comments. Also, they cannot access with plugins and themes.
This user can login to WordPress site and update their profile. They can even change password. They cannot even view comments or write a post. This role is useful only if we need users to login to our site before reading our post and leave a comment.
In addition to above roles, there is an extra user role which is “super admin” which is available in WordPress Multisite Network. They can add users, install plugins and themes. They can perform network-wide actions on a WordPress multi-site setup.

Steps to Add Users in the WordPress Site
It is very simple to add a user with roles as we required.
Log into WordPress Dashboard -> Users -> Add New as shown in the figure.
We get a screen of Add New User as displayed in the image below,
where the admin has to fill the user details and provide a password. There will be a checkbox which is shown in the image below,
which is to send the password to that user via E-mail. It will be marked as per the admin’s wish. At last, we have “Role” with 5 drop-down list box which consist of above-discussed roles(excluding Super Admin). As per the admin’s need, a user can be assigned with the role, which is displayed in the image below.
Once all the field is filled click on to Add New User Button which s shown in the image below.
Now the user is added.
It can be viewed by User -> All Users as shown in the figure below.
Now we get a screen as in the figure below,
where we can add a user and possible to view only administrators of the site. Here the administrator can also change the user’s role, also bulk actions can be done. It is also easy to see the number of posts published by each user as displayed in the figure below.
Customize User Role
Once the user is added we can edit it in an easy way. There will an option edit below the username as shown in the figure below.
Click on to it where we get a screen as displayed below.
Here we can change the username, password, photo, the name displayed and E-mail id. Finally, click on to Update Profile which is seen at the end of the screen as shown in the figure below.
Deleting User Role
If we need to delete a user just click on to “Delete” which is available below the username as shown in the figure below.
Once we click the delete, we get a message box for confirmation of user deletion as shown in the figure below.
Thus, the user can be deleted.
Thus, the User role can be customized.
