To set a simple way to sort the content/post, we need to provide a single piece of information. Hence, tags are used to pick out specific details which are about the post.
Categories, as the name implies it provides a category or group for the post. All related posts are grouped together. This is useful for the readers to understand about the topic which it is related to. Categories and tags are related to each other, but categories are broader than tags.
How To Add Tags and Categories?
We can add the post to tags and categories which are available at the side of the WordPress which are shown in the figure below.
The “Most Used” tab lists the categories which we use often which is shown in the figure below.
In case, your post is related to some other categories which are not available in the category list. What would you do? We can simply add the category in the category list by 2 ways.
1. Category box 2. Dashboard
Simply click the “+Add New Category” as shown n the figure below,
this is to build the new (parent)category. Parent in the sense, it is not sub-category. If you need to create a “sub-category”, select the “parent category”(the existing all categories will be listed in this drop-down box) as shown in the figure below.
Once it is selected, click the “Add New Category” which is below the parent category as shown in the figure below.
Thus, the category is added.
Click on to Post -> Categories in your dashboard as shown in the image below.
We get a category page where we can add the category as shown in the image below.
Category Name- Name the new category.
Slug- It is to develop the URL-friendly version of the name.
Category Parent- As mentioned above, select the parent category, to create the sub-category.
Description- It about describing the category with some sentence.
Thus, we can create the category using dashboard.
Tags should be created with keywords, links and niche statements. You can have as many tags you need for the blog or post. As like categories, tags does not have any subtags. Tags may not be a duplicate title of your post. However, tags also come with the widget in the WordPress. For selecting the tag for your post, you can choose the most used tags as shown in the figure below.
Thus, tags can be created for the post.
